Mo Ibrahim Index 2017: Mauritius ranked First in Overall Governance in Africa

• sustainable economic opportunity; and
• human development.

With a score of 81.4 for this year, Mauritius has experienced an increase of 3.1 since 2007, while Seychelles comes second position with a score of 73.4 and Botswana completes the top three with a score of 72.7.  

The report of this 11th edition of the IIAG observes that while the majority of the countries are experiencing an overall improvement in governance over the last ten years, progress is slackening and reversing for some in the last five years. As a result, Africa’s average governance improvement has slowed down with the exception of the safety and rule of law category.

The top ten countries for the safety and rule of law category are namely: Mauritius, Botswana, Namibia, Cabo Verde, Seychelles, Ghana, South Africa, Lesotho, Zambia and Senegal.

The IIAG was established in recognition of the need for a robust and quantifiable tool for civil society to track governance performance in Africa. IIAG is a tool that measures and monitors governance performance in African countries.
