Cultural Diversity of Mauritius
On the 01st of April, the Christian community worldwide celebrated Easter. Easter is the religious celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb on the third day after his crucifixion. Easter is not a one day celebration. The annual period of Christian observance, called Lent, precedes Easter. Lent is a season of prayer and fasting whereby Catholics are required to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday.
Mauritius has a large Christian, predominantly Catholic population who celebrates Easter in much the same fashion as other parts of the world with church services, parades and traditional chocolate eggs.
Having a diversity of cultures, all Mauritians, irrespective of their religious backgrounds, have the opportunity to enjoy the Easter celebration as a whole community. Various Easter-themed activities and goodies are available throughout that period, from Easter brunch to Easter egg paintings. A large number of Mauritians often spend the day at the beach and celebrate around a picnic.
The spirit of Easter is felt with distribution of Easter chocolate eggs amongst children and adults likewise. As for most people, Easter is the celebration of a new beginning.
