Cultural Diversity of Mauritius

The preparations for Ugadi begin approximately one week ahead of the festival. A thorough cleaning of the house is done, and new clothes and gifts are bought for the family members. House entrances are also decorated with mango leaves and ‘muggulu’, which is an art form in which patterns are designed on the floor using colored rice, flour, and flower petals.  This is believed to bring prosperity and success.

This day involves following various rituals and people visit temples and also prepare and share a special dish called pachadi. This dish is a festive food that combines all flavors – sweet, sour, salty, bitter - it is a symbolic reminder that one must expect all flavors of experiences in life.

We wish you all Ugadi Shubhakanshalu.
